This guide begins in Chapter 1 by tracing the development and early evaluation processes of ayurvedic medicine in India. It is followed in Chapter 2 by a discussion of the more recent scientific investigations into the subject.
After these two introductory chapters, ayurvedic plants are described according to their indications in different body systems. In cases where plants have more than one use, they appear in more than one location according to their relevant indication.
The systems are divided into twelve chapters: gastrointestinal agents; hepatoprotective agents; respiratory tract drugs; cardiovascular drugs; urinary tract drugs; antirheumatic agents; skin and trauma care agents; gynecological agents; antidiabetic agents; central nervous system agents; antiaging agents, adaptogens and immunostimulants; dental and ophthalmological agents.
The role of each system and its organs is briefly explained at the beginning of each chapter. Botanical names as well as common names in different languages are also provided.
Each plant is covered in terms of its physical description, the therapeutic uses for its different parts, its indications according to supporting clinical data, any scientific research carried out and its safety considerations.
The book includes 12 colour plates with illustrations of traditional ayurvedic plants. An appendix lists each plant, its indication and the chapters in which it appears. There is an index as well.
